English tests for Australian visas: levels, scores and strategy
Functional, vocational, competent, proficient, superior. What the bands mean, which visa needs which, and when retesting is the cheapest points you'll ever buy.

Australian visas use five English bands, evidenced by accepted tests such as IELTS and PTE Academic. As a guide in IELTS terms: functional (~4.5 average), vocational (5 in each), competent (6 in each), proficient (7 in each), superior (8 in each). Work and graduate visas set minimum bands; the skilled points test pays for higher ones, with proficient worth 10 points and superior 20. Results have validity windows, so test timing is part of visa strategy, not admin.
Which visas want what
| Visa | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| Skills in Demand (482) | Minimum bands by stream, broadly vocational-to-competent territory |
| Skilled 189/190/491 | Competent to qualify; proficient (+10) or superior (+20) to compete |
| Temporary Graduate (485) | Competent-level scores, taken recently |
| Student (500) | Course- and provider-linked minimums |
| Partner, citizenship | No test hurdle of this kind |
Exemptions exist, most commonly for holders of passports from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada and NZ on several visa types, and test equivalencies cover PTE, TOEFL iBT, OET and Cambridge. Always check the setting for your exact visa and stream before booking.
The strategy part
- Superior English is 20 points. For borderline skilled candidates, no other single move compares. A $400 resit that lifts 10 points is the cheapest ranking improvement available.
- Validity windows bite: tests are generally usable for a limited period for each purpose, and the 485 wants recent results. Sequence testing so results are fresh at lodgement.
- Pick the test that suits you: scores are equivalised, but plenty of people perform a band higher on PTE's format than IELTS's, or vice versa. A practice test in each costs little and can decide it.
