a. The Now column is the first instalment for the main applicant. Extra applicants are family members included in the same application. A second instalment, where one applies, is payable before the visa is granted, and the Department notifies you when it is due.
b. The Department's pricing table lists a $700 subsequent temporary application charge against the 482, 500, 407 and the in-Australia tourist stream of the 600, and an $80 non-internet application charge against the 155/157, 417, the 462 second and third applications, and the 485. Whether either applies depends on your circumstances: the $700 charge on your visa history and where you apply, the $80 charge on how you lodge.

Thresholds index every 1 July. A sponsored worker's pay must meet the threshold that applies on the day the employer lodges the nomination. The 482 levy is charged for each year of the nominated stay or part of a year. Full context in the costs guide.
How a charge is made up
First instalment. Paid when you lodge. It is the base application charge for the main applicant plus an additional applicant charge for each family member included in the application.
Second instalment. Payable before the visa is granted. It applies to some visas and applicants, for example the parent visas, the 186 and applicants 18 or over assessed as not having functional English. The Department notifies you when it is due.
Date of receipt. The charge that applies is the one in force on the date the Department receives your application.
Fee questions
How much is the 189 visa?
The Department of Home Affairs charges $6,135 for the main applicant on a Skilled Independent (189) points-tested application from 1 July 2026, up from $4,910. Each additional applicant aged 18 or over adds $3,070 and each under 18 adds $1,540. A second instalment of $4,885 is payable for each applicant aged 18 or over who is assessed as not having functional English. Skills assessments, English tests and health checks are separate costs.
How much is the 491 visa?
The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (491) visa is $6,140 for the main applicant from 1 July 2026, up from $4,910. Each additional applicant aged 18 or over adds $3,070 and each under 18 adds $1,535. A second instalment of $4,890 is payable for each applicant aged 18 or over who is assessed as not having functional English. The Skilled Nominated (190) visa carries the same $6,140 first-instalment charge, with a $4,885 second instalment on the same test.
How much is a partner visa?
$11,710 for the main applicant from 1 July 2026, up from $9,365. That charge applies to the Partner (820/801), Partner (309/100) and Prospective Marriage (300) visas. An additional applicant aged 18 or over is $5,860 and one under 18 is $2,935. The Department's pricing table shows a reduced charge for some onshore applicants, for example $1,955 for a Prospective Marriage visa holder who marries and applies before that visa ends.
How much is a Skills in Demand (482) visa?
$4,015 for the main applicant from 1 July 2026, up from $3,210, in each of the three streams. An additional applicant aged 18 or over is $4,015 and one under 18 is $1,005. The employer pays the sponsorship and nomination costs and the Skilling Australians Fund levy ($1,200 or $1,800 for each year of the nominated stay), and the Department says these cannot be passed on to the visa holder. The salary must also meet the Core Skills ($79,423) or Specialist Skills ($146,576) income threshold.
How much is a student visa?
$2,500 for most students from 1 July 2026, up from $2,000. An additional applicant aged 18 or over is $1,530 and one under 18 is $500. ELICOS and non-award students pay $2,050, and eligible Pacific Island, Timor-Leste and ASEAN citizens pay a lower charge. A $700 subsequent temporary application charge may also be payable if you apply from inside Australia for a further temporary visa after an earlier one you also applied for in Australia.
How much does a contributory parent visa cost?
The Contributory Parent (143) visa is $6,300 at lodgement and, for most applicants, a $43,600 second instalment before grant: $49,900 in total for a main applicant. The temporary Contributory Parent (173) visa is $4,245 plus $29,130, or $33,375 in total. Additional applicants pay $2,125 (18 or over) or $1,065 (under 18) at lodgement. Some applicants who held a 173 pay a lower second instalment, and an Assurance of Support bond is a separate cost.
When do Australian visa fees change?
The Department changes visa application charges on 1 July each year, and the charge that applies depends on the date it receives your application. On 1 July 2026 the first instalment for most visas rose by about 25%, for example the partner visa from $9,365 to $11,710. A few moved by other amounts: the Resident Return visa (155/157) went from $490 to $1,475, and second and third Working Holiday (417) and Work and Holiday (462) applications are now $1,000. Income thresholds are indexed on the same date.
Are visa charges refunded, and is there a card surcharge?
The Department does not usually refund the visa application charge, even if the application is refused or withdrawn. A second instalment is not payable if the application is refused or withdrawn before it is paid. From 1 October 2026 the Department no longer applies surcharges to card, PayPal or UnionPay payments.
