Most visa applicants must meet the health requirement, assessed through examinations by approved panel physicians (Bupa Medical Visa Services onshore). The test is not "are you healthy", it's whether a condition is likely to mean significant healthcare and community-service costs, or limit access for Australians. Many conditions pass without issue, some trigger further assessment, and several permanent visas carry health waivers that a well-argued file can win.
How it actually works
- Who's examined: requirements scale with visa length and risk: from none, to chest X-ray and medical, to additional tests, and all permanent applicants are examined, including dependants (whether migrating or not, for most permanent visas).
- The cost test: a Medical Officer of the Commonwealth estimates whether a condition would likely exceed the significant-cost threshold over a defined period. It's an actuarial judgement, not a moral one.
- One fails, all fail: for most permanent visas the "one fails all fail" rule applies across the family unit, which is why dependants are assessed.
Conditions, honestly
Diagnoses like well-managed hepatitis, diabetes, or a disability do not automatically fail anyone; the assessment is about projected cost and service demand, evidenced by specialist reports. Tuberculosis screening is the one absolute-style rule: active TB must be treated before grant. Where a Medical Officer's opinion goes against you, waiver-eligible visas (several employer, partner and other permanent classes) let you argue mitigation: private cover, family support, earning capacity, and the compassionate weight of the case.
Timing and tactics
Health clearances expire, usually after 12 months, so examine in sequence with the rest of the file rather than first. Declare conditions honestly: an undisclosed condition discovered later is a credibility problem that outlives the medical one. And if your family includes a member with a significant condition, get advice before lodging, because visa choice (waiver-eligible or not) can decide the outcome before any doctor does.
