The National Innovation visa (subclass 858) is Australia's permanent visa for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement in research, business, technology, sport or the arts. It replaced the Global Talent visa on 6 December 2024 and is invitation-based: you submit an expression of interest, and only invited candidates can apply. You also need a nominator with a national reputation in your field.
Who actually gets invited
The bar is genuine international distinction, evidenced, not asserted. Successful files typically show things like: senior roles or founding positions in significant organisations, published research with real citation weight, national or international awards, media coverage of the person (not their employer), patents or products with measurable impact, or representation at elite levels of sport or the arts. The mechanics
- Expression of interest first. Invitations are prioritised toward fields of national importance; timing is not guaranteed.
- A nominator is mandatory: an Australian citizen, permanent resident, eligible NZ citizen or Australian organisation with a national reputation in your field.
- Permanent residence in one step for you and included family members if granted.
- Evidence is the application. The difference between a grant and a polite refusal is how the record is curated and corroborated.
An honest note on fit
Most careers, however successful, don't clear this bar, and lodging a weak expression of interest achieves nothing. Where the record is borderline, the better play is often a Specialist Skills (482) role at $146,717+ while the record matures. A registered agent's real value here is telling you which side of that line you're on before you spend anything.

Is the Global Talent visa still open?
No. It closed to new applications on 6 December 2024 and the National Innovation visa (858) replaced it. Existing Global Talent applications continued under the old rules.
Do I need a job offer for the National Innovation visa?
No job offer is required. You need an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement and a qualified nominator, and you must be invited after an expression of interest.
