New Zealand citizens in Australia: the direct citizenship pathway
Since July 2023, most Kiwis on a 444 can go straight to Australian citizenship without a permanent visa first. Here's how it works.

New Zealand citizens living in Australia on the Special Category visa (subclass 444) can apply directly for Australian citizenship once they meet the four-year residence requirement, without needing a permanent visa first. That's been the rule since 1 July 2023, and it removed the single biggest obstacle Kiwis faced. The 444 itself counts as a permanent-resident-equivalent for citizenship purposes.
What changed in 2023
Before July 2023, NZ citizens on the 444 were "temporary" for citizenship purposes and usually needed to win a skilled or employer visa first, the same contest as everyone else. From 1 July 2023, time on the 444 counts as permanent residence for citizenship eligibility. In practice: live here lawfully for four years, keep your absences inside the caps, and you can apply.
What still catches people
- The absence caps still apply: no more than 12 months away across the four years, 90 days in the final year.
- Character matters: police checks cover your time in every country you've lived in, New Zealand included.
- Family members who aren't NZ citizens don't ride on your 444. Partners and children with other passports need their own pathway, often a partner or child visa.
- Centrelink and benefits questions are separate from citizenship law. Don't let a rumour about one decide the other.
Is citizenship worth it for Kiwis?
The 444 already lets you live and work here indefinitely, so the question is fair. Citizenship adds what the 444 can't: an Australian passport, voting, full access to student support and public-sector roles, and immunity from the visa cancellation powers that can end a 444 after serious character issues. For families settled here, it's usually the cleaner long-term position.

Do New Zealanders still need a permanent visa before citizenship?
No. Since 1 July 2023, time on the Special Category visa (444) counts toward citizenship directly. Four years of residence with limited absences is the core requirement.
Does my Australian-born child become a citizen?
A child born in Australia to an NZ-citizen parent on a 444 generally acquires Australian citizenship at birth if a parent was a permanent-resident-equivalent at the time, and otherwise on their 10th birthday if they've lived here throughout. It's worth confirming for your dates.
My partner isn't a New Zealand citizen. What are their options?
They need their own visa, most commonly a partner visa once you're settled, or a work or skilled pathway in their own right. The 444 doesn't cover family members.
