SkillSelect and invitation rounds: how the queue actually works
Lodging an expression of interest costs nothing and guarantees nothing. How ranking, rounds and occupation ceilings decide who gets invited.

SkillSelect is a ranking system, not a queue. Your expression of interest (EOI) sits in the pool with your claimed points score, and periodic invitation rounds invite the highest-ranked candidates. Same score, earlier lodgement wins. An EOI is free, lasts two years, and can be updated, but only an invitation lets you actually apply. This is why "I have 65 points" and "I will be invited" are very different sentences.
How ranking really plays out
- Points first: a 90 beats an 85 beats a 70, regardless of occupation demand in most rounds.
- Date second: ties are broken by when your EOI reached that score, so updating your score resets your place among equals.
- Program levers: round sizes and priorities shift with government planning levels, and states run their own selection logic for 190/491 nominations.
What actually gets people invited
Three moves account for most successful invitations we see. First, an honest points audit: claimed points that can't be evidenced at application stage are worse than useless, because an invitation on inflated claims leads to a refusal. Second, targeted score building: English from proficient to superior is worth 10 points on its own. Third, widening the net: adding 190 and 491 preferences, and engaging with state programs whose criteria you genuinely meet, multiplies your chances without touching your score.
The mistakes that quietly cost years
Claiming points you can't prove. Letting an EOI sit for two years without checking whether your age band, or the rules, changed. Ignoring state nomination because "I want 189 or nothing". And lodging the visa application late in the 60-day invitation window with documents you only started gathering after the invitation arrived. All avoidable, all common.

Does lodging an EOI cost anything?
No, an expression of interest is free and remains active for two years. Costs start with skills assessments, English tests, and the visa application after you're invited.
Can I update my EOI after lodging?
Yes, and you should when your circumstances improve. Note that a score change resets your date-of-effect among candidates on the same score.
What happens after an invitation?
You have 60 days to lodge the visa application with evidence for every claimed point. Unclaimed or unprovable points at this stage cause refusals, not corrections.
Why was my occupation invited at 85 when the minimum is 65?
Because 65 is eligibility, not competition. Invitations go to the highest-ranked candidates in each round, and popular occupations routinely clear well above the floor.
