Every subclass 500 applicant must satisfy the Genuine Student requirement: a structured assessment of whether you genuinely intend to study, built from targeted questions about your circumstances, your course choice and what it does for your future. It replaced the old "genuine temporary entrant" test, and it's where most student refusals now concentrate. The fix isn't a better essay; it's a coherent story where the course, your history and your plans actually line up.
What the assessment weighs
- Your circumstances: ties to your home country, family, employment, and anything that explains why this course now.
- The course's logic: does it build on your education or career, or is it a sideways step that only makes sense as a visa?
- Value to your future: what the qualification changes for you, stated concretely.
- Your history: previous visas, previous study, course-hopping, and gaps, all of which are visible to the decision-maker.
The patterns behind refusals
The same fact patterns recur: a course far below existing qualifications with no explanation; serial course changes onshore that map to work rights rather than learning; answers that contradict the written history; and agents-of-the-education kind who fill the form with slogans instead of facts. None of these are fatal by themselves. Unexplained, together, they read as a work plan wearing a study costume, and that's exactly what the requirement exists to catch.
Building the case properly
Answer the actual questions with verifiable specifics: name the units, connect them to a role or industry at home or in a lawful onshore pathway, evidence the funds honestly, and address anything unusual head-on rather than hoping it goes unnoticed. From 1 July 2026 the application charge is $2,500 and it is not refunded, which makes doing this once, properly, the cheap option.

Common questions
Is the GTE statement still a thing?
The old genuine temporary entrant essay was replaced by the Genuine Student requirement's targeted questions. The substance survived: your intent is assessed from your whole file, not one statement.
Can I mention wanting PR later?
Acknowledging that lawful post-study pathways exist is acceptable; the test is whether you're a genuine student now. Pretending you've never heard of the 485 convinces no one, and building your whole case on migration intent fails.
Does a refusal hurt future applications?
Yes, every application asks about refusal history and the file is on record. It raises the evidentiary bar for whatever comes next, which is why the first application deserves the effort.
