Visa conditions: the fine print that runs your life in Australia
8503, 8558, work limits and study rules. What the four-digit codes on your grant letter mean, and which ones can end a pathway before it starts.

Every visa carries numbered conditions that control what you can do, and breaching them risks cancellation. The ones that change lives most: 8503 "no further stay" (blocks most onshore applications entirely), work-limitation conditions on student and some other visas, 8558 (visitors can't stay more than 12 months in any 18), and 8516 (keep meeting the visa's requirements). Your exact conditions are on your grant notice and in VEVO, and checking them is step zero of any plan to stay longer.
The big four
- 8503, no further stay: found on some visitor and short-stay visas. While it stands, you cannot lodge most substantive applications onshore; a waiver exists but only for major, compelling changes in circumstances beyond your control. If your plan involves staying, this condition is the first thing to check.
- Work limits: student visas cap work hours during study periods; breaching the cap is a leading cause of cancellations and shadows every later application.
- 8558: visitors must not spend more than 12 months in Australia in any 18-month window. Serial back-to-back visits attract refusals at the border, not just on paper.
- 8516: you must continue to satisfy the criteria your visa was granted on: dropping the course, the job or the relationship that justified the visa unpicks it.
Check, don't remember
Conditions differ between two people on the same subclass, granted in different circumstances. VEVO shows the live position, and employers and universities check it. Before signing a lease, accepting a job or lodging anything, read the actual conditions on the actual grant.
If you've already breached one
Move fast and honestly. Some breaches (a work-hour slip promptly explained) can be survivable; ignored ones mature into cancellations, and cancellations into section 48 problems and re-entry bans. The order of operations is: understand the breach, get advice, then engage with the Department, not the reverse.
