Before Australia weighs your points, an assessing authority decides whether your career counts. How the system works and why it's step one, not step three.

Most skilled and many employer-sponsored visas require a positive skills assessment: a formal ruling by the authority for your occupation (ACS for ICT, Engineers Australia for engineers, VETASSESS for many professions, TRA for trades, AHPRA-linked bodies for health) that your qualifications and experience match the ANZSCO occupation you're claiming. Assessments cost several hundred to over a thousand dollars, take weeks to months, and many expire, which is why they're step one of a skilled strategy, not an afterthought.
How authorities actually decide
- Qualification match: your degree or trade credential compared against the occupation's required level and field, sometimes with knowledge-area breakdowns.
- Employment evidence: duties-rich references on letterhead, payslips and contracts proving you performed the occupation, not just held the title.
- Deductions: several authorities deduct early experience as "qualifying", ICT applicants know this well, which changes both eligibility and points math.
- Occupation-specific extras: practical assessments for trades, competency demonstrations, registration prerequisites for health and teaching.
Where files fail
The recurring failures are choosing the wrong ANZSCO code for the evidence available, references that list soft duties instead of the occupation's core tasks, unexplained employment gaps, and lodging a visa timeline that ignores the authority's queue. A negative assessment isn't always the end, review and reassessment paths exist, but it burns months and fees that sequencing would have saved.
Sequence it like this
Duties → correct ANZSCO code → that code's authority and its rules → gather the evidence they specify → assess → then EOI and everything else. Run English testing in parallel, not after. Done in this order, the assessment underwrites every later claim; done late, it's the bottleneck that expires other documents while you wait.
